چکیده
We validate formaldehyde (HCHO) vertical column densities (VCDs) from Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite Nadir Mapper (OMPS-NM) instruments onboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellite for 2012–2020 Oceanic Atmospheric Administration-20 (NOAA-20) 2018–2020, hereafter referred to as OMPS-NPP OMPS-N20, with ground-based Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) observations of Network Detection Composition Change (NDACC). OMPS-NPP/N20 HCHO products reproduce seasonal variability at 24 FTIR sites. Monthly has a very good agreement FTIR, showing correlation coefficients 0.83 0.88, respectively. (N20) biases averaged over all sites are ?0.9 (4) ± 3 (6)%. However, clean (with VCDs < 4.0 × 1015 molecules cm?2), positive 20 (32) 6 (18)% occur (N20). At > cm?2, negative ?15% 4% appear OMPS-NPP, but OMPS-N20 shows smaller bias 0.5% 6% due its ground pixel footprints. Therefore, footprint sizes important in distinguishing small-scale plumes. In addition, we discuss correction provide lower limit monthly uncertainty products. The total is 0.7 (0.8) corresponding relative 32 (30)%. case however, decreases 31 (18)%.

Trends of ozone total columns and vertical distribution from FTIR observations at eight NDACC stations around the globe
Ground-based Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) measurements of solar absorption spectra can provide ozone total columns with a precision of 2 % but also independent partial column amounts in about four vertical layers, one in the troposphere and three in the stratosphere up to about 45 km, with a precision of 5–6 %. We use eight of the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change...
متن کاملPostlaunch performance of the Suomi National Polarorbiting Partnership Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) nadir sensors
The prelaunch specifications for nadir sensors of the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) were designed to ensure that measurements from them could be used to retrieve total column ozone and nadir ozone profile information both for operational use and for use in long-term ozone data records. In this paper, we will show results from our extensive analysis of the performance of the nadir mapp...
متن کاملFirst results from a rotational Raman scattering cloud algorithm applied to the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) Nadir Mapper
This paper reports initial results from an Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) Nadir Mapper cloud pressure and cloud fraction algorithm. The OMPS cloud products are intended for use in OMPS ozone or other tracegas algorithms. We developed the OMPS cloud products using a heritage algorithm developed for the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) on NASA’s Aura satellite. The cloud pressure algori...
متن کاملObserving atmospheric formaldehyde (HCHO) from space: validation and intercomparison of six retrievals from four satellites (OMI, GOME2A, GOME2B, OMPS) with SEAC4RS aircraft observations over the Southeast US.
Formaldehyde (HCHO) column data from satellites are widely used as a proxy for emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) but validation of the data has been extremely limited. Here we use highly accurate HCHO aircraft observations from the NASA SEAC4RS campaign over the Southeast US in August-September 2013 to validate and intercompare six retrievals of HCHO columns from four different sat...
متن کاملValidation of ATMS Calibration Accuracy Using Suomi NPP Pitch Maneuver Observations
The Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) satellite was launched on 28 October, 2011, and carries the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) onboard. Currently, ATMS performance in orbit is very stable and the calibration parameters (e.g., noise and accuracy) meet specifications. This study documents an ATMS calibration error budget model and its results for community reference...
